All aspects of paediatric respiratory medicine, namely any condition that affects a child’s lungs and airways (breathing tubes/windpipe). Areas of interest include asthma, chronic cough, recurrent chest infections, newborn breathing problems/reflux, allergy-related disorders, noisy breathing/stridor, bronchiolitis, sleep-related breathing disorder, paediatric bronchoscopy, bronchiectasis, congenital lung disease, cystic fibrosis, and rare lung disorders. Dr Fonseka has a specialist interest in pleural disease and has sat on the British Thoracic Society national guideline committees for both mesothelioma and pleural disease. Clinical interests: • Pleural infection • Pleural effusions • Mesothelioma • Diffuse pleural thickening • Pneumothorax • Lung cancer. Dr de Fonseka is heavily involved with pleural intervention such as local anaesthetic thoracoscopy, indwelling pleural catheters, intercostal chest drains and diagnostic/therapeutic pleural aspirations.
